DESCRIPTION:The Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) runs March 13-19\, 2017 in Penticton\, B.C. and will see a champion crowned in the Midget Prep\, Midget Varsity\, Elite 15s\, Bantam Prep and Bantam Varsity divisions. \nTickets are available at www.valleyfirsttix.com\, or in person at the Valley First Box Office at the South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC). \nTickets are $15 for a day pass or $40 for a full event pass\, while students (18 and under) get in free. \nThe majority of games will take place at the SOEC\, Okanagan Hockey Training Centre and Memorial Arena\, while a small amount of games will be held at Oliver Arena and Summerland Arena. \nThe 2016-17 CSSHL Awards Ceremony takes place on Thursday\, March 16\, 2017 at the SOEC. \nThis marks the third consecutive year that the City of Penticton has hosted the event\, which has grown from 33 teams and 609 student athletes in 2015 to 49 teams and over 900 student athletes in 2017. \nFans will be treated to fast-paced action featuring many future junior hockey stars as 88 Western Hockey League (WHL) Bantam Draft picks will be competing\, including seven athletes selected in the first round of the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. \nOver 20 current CSSHL athletes have suited up in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) this season\, while another nine have seen action in the WHL.

DESCRIPTION:The biggest Western Canadian Junior ‘A’ Championship\, presented by Sun Life Financial\, is coming to Penticton this April! The Penticton Vees Jr. ‘A’ Hockey Club\, in conjunction with the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL)\, has been awarded the 2017 Western Canada Cup (WCC) April 29 to May 7\, 2017.   The Vees\, along with the Chilliwack Chiefs\, Brooks Bandits\, Portage Terriers and Battleford North Stars will participate in a five-team tournament for the WCC title. Of the five teams\, two will qualify for the 2017 RBC Cup in Cobourg\, Ontario.  The 13-game tournament includes a round-robin schedule followed by two semi-final games and a championship game. The Western Canada Cup Champion and the runner-up will both represent Western Canada at the RBC Cup. The Vees organization along with the South Okanagan Events Centre and the City of Penticton is excited to welcome Western Canada’s best to the South Okanagan in the spring of 2017. \nTickets are now on sale for the 2017 Western Canada Cup Awards Gala\, on Friday\, May 5th\, at the South Okanagan Events Centre. Tickets are $75 per person\, for the gala\, which includes dinner and the tournament’s awards ceremony. A very limited number of tickets are available; gala tables seat eight. Cocktails begin at 5:00PM and dinner begins at 6:00PM. SUMMARY:Western Canada Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships
DESCRIPTION:Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)\, also known as ‘The Gentle Art’\, is a martial art\, combat sport and self-defense art\, which primarily focuses on grappling and submission. This sport became prominent in the early 1990s when Royce Gracie brought BJJ to the Ultimate Fighter Championships\, or more well known today as UFC. BJJ is a sport that is successfully practiced by men\, women\, and children of different ages\, shapes\, sizes and physical abilities. It truly is a sport for everyone. Children practicing Jiu-Jitsu are rewarded with a sense of confidence\, athleticism and focus\, while building knowledge of self-defense\, which helps in the bully proofing of our youth. \nNot only is BJJ a physical challenge\, it is also a mental challenge. The physical demands are a combination of cardiovascular endurance\, speed\, strength training and developing a strong grip to maintain positioning in a match. A small error during a match can drastically affect the outcome of matches. Many athletes declare that the mental preparation is the most challenging obstacle\, whether it is their first tournament as a White Belt\, or an established World Champion Black Belt. It takes a lot of heart and courage to take the lessons from everyday training and apply them in a tournament setting\, with hundreds of people watching. The reward of overcoming both the mental and physical obstacles are second to none. \nBrazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Canada is a fast growing sport\, that embraces the notion of a close knit community where promoters\, school owners\, competitors\, supporters and sponsors can all come together to unite for the love of the sport. The CBJJF is dedicated 100% to growing this sport in a safe and respectable manner where everyone is welcome to compete.  \nDoors to the Western Canadian Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships at the SOEC open at 8:00AM with matches scheduled throughout the day from 9:00AM until 6:00PM. Tickets are ONLY available at the door and are $10.00 for adults. Youth (13 to 17)  are $5.00. Children (12 and under) and seniors are FREE.
